Using People Development to aid Procurement during “Once in a Lifetime” Events… Twice

Four years ago, the Public Health England Colindale Scientific Procurement Team suffered from low staff morale and high turnover rates. It over-relied on expensive contractors and had a poor reputation with stakeholders and suppliers. By implementing an intensive and individualised approach to career development, including an entry-level graduate programme, apprenticeships, shadowing and volunteering opportunities, the scientific team has successfully conquered two “once in a lifetime” events- EU Exit and the COVID-19 pandemic. All whilst putting in place a £22bn National Microbiology Framework for use across the Department of Health, charities, local authorities, academia, devolved nations and the NHS.
